March Log (Arnøya / Kågen / Laukøya and Tromsø)
Notes
- air temperatures below are measured on sea level
- if clear sky, assume inversion
2026-03-01—2026-03-02 (A)
- Air: -2 to +4 C
- Wind: S-SW 6-10 m/s
- Precipitation: sunny, cloudy and some light rain showers
- Observations: saturation of the dry surface, sticky conditions up to 300-400 masl., could lead to some small wet sluffs and slabs “lower down” by the sea
2026-03-03 (A)
- Air: 0 to +2 C
- Wind: SE-SW 6-15 m/s
- Precipitation: wintry mix heavier showers
- Observations: new wet to dry loading, new slabs on N slopes
2026-03-03—2026-03-05 (T)
- Air: -2 to +4 C
- Wind: S 5-10 m/s
- Precipitation: cloudy and some heavier rain showers combined with wintry mix showers
- Observations: further saturation of the snowpack lower down, new and wet snow higher up with slabs on N aspects
2026-03-06—2026-03-07 (A)
- Air: +2 to +4 C
- Wind: S-SW 5-15 m/s
- Precipitation: heavy wintry mix and rain showers
- Observations: further heavy water saturation of all mountains' aspect up to 400 masl., new wet snow and also fresh / soft slabs on E aspect, semi-isothermal snowpack lower down due to the thaw, wet sluffs
2026-03-08—2026-03-09 (A)
- Air: +2 to +6 C
- Wind: SW 5-10 m/s
- Precipitation: heavy rain in the morning (first day), sunny and cloudy
- Observations: still some new and localized heavy water saturation of all mountains' aspect up to 500 masl., new wet snow and also fresh / soft slabs on E aspect, spontaneous cornice drops
2026-03-10—2026-03-11 (A)
- Air: 0 to +6 C
- Wind: S-W 5-15 m/s
- Precipitation: cloudy, wintry mix and rain showers
- Observations: less rain and water percolating through the snowpack made the surface feel crusty but lower down there still is / was quite some wet crystals. There was one big glide / slush slide on a southern slope in Akkarvik, most likely due to the amount of free water that had reached the ground.
2026-03-12—2026-03-13 (A)
- Air: 0 to +3 C
- Wind: S 5-10 m/s
- Precipitation: cloudy, wintry mix and heavier rain showers
- Observations: repeated wet cycle with some minor wet sluffs on southern slopes, this due to the sun on new snow. The snowpack that had been exposed to drenching rain has become semi- or entirely isothermal while higher up there still are some weak layers from earlier. Not sure how and where they respond (if at all). New soft / fresh wind slabs on northern slopes.
2026-03-14—2026-03-15 (A)
- Air: 0 to +3 C
- Wind: W 5-15 m/s, almost calm the second day
- Precipitation: heavier rain showers the first day during the morning, scattered clouds and long periods with sun
- Observations: new minor wet sluffs, wind slabs higher up on eastern slopes
2026-03-16—2026-03-17 (A)
- Air: +1 to +5 C
- Wind: S-SE 5-20 m/s, almost calm the second day
- Precipitation: cloudy and periods with sun
- Observations: pretty hard and solid MF everywhere, even higher up. Sun and coming rain will surely change the game.
